  Freedom Tower becomes NYC's Tallest
NYC's ambitious Freedom Tower and World Trade Center project reached a milestone in the ongoing construction. On April 30, 2012, steelworkers bolted on a structural beam making the Freedom Tower slightly taller than The Empire State Building becoming New York City's tallest building. When it's finished in 2014 it will be 1,250ft with an architectural tower atop bringing it's total height to 1,776ft.

The Freedom Tower in New York City is the first of several new towers to be built in lower Manhattan at the original site of the World Trade Center. Pictured below it the Freedom Tower with the reflecting pool at it's base.

Built in 1931-32, The Empire State Building (1,250ft) has remained the tallest in NYC until the original WTC Twin Towers were built in 1972. Prior to that, the Chrysler Building (1,201ft), in the foreground was the tallest and was completed just a year before the Empire State Building's completion.

The Sears Tower in Chicago, renamed The Willis Tower,  is still one of the world's tallest buildings at 1,450ft

In Taipei, Taiwan, this building, Taipei 101 ranks high on the list of tallest buildings at 1,670ft.

The twin towers of the Petronal Towers are iconic and were the world's tallest for a short time after their completion in 1998, 1,483ft.

Shun Hing Square in Shenzhen, China stands at 1,260ft

World's Tallest building by a large measure is the Burj Kalifa completed in 2009 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates at an impressive height of 2,722ft. It will remain the tallest for some time as no other  planned buildings will be taller.

The International Commerce Tower in Hong Kong scrapes the sky at a height of 1,588ft.

The Jinmao Building in Shanghai, China stands at 1,381ft.

The Financial District in Shanghai, China is home of several of the world's tallest buildings.

Houston, Texas' tallest buildings, and we have a few, are in the Downtown area, such as the JP Morgan Chase Tower, which is just over 1000ft tall and 75 stories. The Williams Tower is the third tallest in Houston, though it has the distinction of being the world's tallest building not in a downtown area.

The JP Morgan Chase Tower, Houston, Tx stands 1,001ft.

The Transco Tower, Renamed The Williams Tower stands at 901ft. On a personal note, in 1983 I toured this building and stood in an open communications bay shown just below the angled roof near the top. This tower swayed 3-6ft in the light breeze that night.
